Willie Lee Broughton (born September 9, 1964) is a former American football defensive tackle in the National Football League for the Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Raiders, and New Orleans Saints. He played college football at the University of Miami.

Early years

Broughton attended Fort Pierce Central High School. He accepted a football scholarship from the University of Miami. As a senior, he played every position along the defensive line.

Professional career

Indianapolis Colts

Broughton was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round (88th overall) of the 1985 NFL Draft. He was also selected in the 1985 USFL Territorial Draft by the Orlando Renegades.

In his second season, he started the first 8 games at nose tackle, after the team released veteran Brad White. He was limited by a neck injury the rest of the season. In 1987, he injured a knee before the start of the year and was placed on the injured reserve list on August 4.

On July 5, 1988, he was signed as a free agent.[1] He was waived on August 23.[2]

Dallas Cowboys

In 1989, his college coach Jimmy Johnson gave him a tryout and ended up signing him on July 18. He started 14 games, while registering 92 tackles (fifth on the team), 3 sacks and 2 passes defensed.

In 1990, he only played in 4 games as backup defensive tackle, after suffering a lower back strain before the fifth game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was cut on August 20, 1991.[3]

Los Angeles Raiders

Broughton spent a year out of football rehabilitating his back, before being signed as a free agent by the Oakland Raiders in 1992 and starting 8 games at left defensive tackle during the season.[4]

On August 30, 1993, he was released and later re-signed the next day.[5] He did not play in 1994, after dislocating his right elbow in a preseason drill.

On June 2, 1995, he was signed by the Raiders, before being traded to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a draft choice on August 28.[6]

New Orleans Saints

In 1995, he started 10 games at left defensive tackle. In 1996, he appeared in 14 games (5 starts), before being placed on the injured reserve list on December 19.[7] He was cut on July 18, 1997.[8]

Personal life

His Brother Dock Luckie played nose tackle for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
