The station is owned by Cumulus Media. Prior to the previous oldies format, 103.9 aired a Top 40 (CHR) format as "Magic 104", WMGV. The station was originally licensed to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. When switching music formats from classic rock to oldies in the early 1990's, the station ran a "Louie Louie" marathon, playing various versions non-stop until the format change was complete. Fittingly, the current mascot is named Louie the Cool Cat. In the 1970s the station was a top 40/rock format with WOSH call letters before switching to WMGV. Prior to 2001, WVBO was housed in the studios on Bowen Street, Oshkosh. The station, along with its sister stations 96.9 The Fox WWWX, 99.5 Nash FM, NewsTalk 1490 WOSH and 1280 WNAM, then moved their facilities to Washburn Street next to Interstate 41.
