Yisrael Hopstein (1737–1814),[1][2] also known as the Maggid of Kozhnitz,[3] was one of the more important Hasidic leaders of Poland during the 18th and early 19th century . He was a student of the Magid of Mezritch and the Rebbe Reb Melech Elimelech of Lizhensk. He wrote many books on Hasidut and Kabalah.

Biography

He was born in Opatów, to his father, Shabbetai, who was at an advanced age, after having received a blessing from the Baal Shem Tov. The father was a bookbinder; Yisrael's mother's name was Perl. Hopsztajn studied under R' Shmelke of Nikolsberg, and later under the Mezeritcher Maggid and R' Elimelech of Lizhensk.[2]

Even as a young child he was recognized as an Illui, a prodigy. He studied under the tutelage of Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg, who eventually convinced R' Israel to go learn with the Magid of Mezritch. After the passing of the Maggid, he went to learn from the Rebbe Reb Melekh Elimelech of Lizhensk.

He lived years in Kozhnitz (Kozienice), was founder of the Kozhnitz Hasidic dynasty, and left this world the 14th of Tishrei[4] (Sept. 28, 1814).[5][6]

Family

He was married to Royze. They had 3 children, (two sons and one daughter):

  • Rabbi Moshe Elyakim who eventually replaced his father as Rebbe after R' Yisroel's passing,[7]
  • Leah Perl (who married R' Avi Ezra Zelig Shapira, Rabbi of Grenitz), and,
  • R' Mottel, who died in his youth.

He authored many works, including:[2]

  • Avodat Yisrael, a commentary on the Torah and Pirkei Avot
  • Beit Yisrael on Talmud
  • Chidushei Maggid Mishna on Mishnayot
  • Geulat Yisrael on Maharal's works
