It was discovered on 20 March 1998, by the LINEAR team at Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site in Socorro, New Mexico, in the United States.[7] The asteroid was named after Elysia Segal, a 2003 ISEF awardee.[2] Orbit and classificationElysiasegal orbits the Sun in the inner main-belt at a distance of 2.0–2.8 AU once every 3 years and 8 months (1,351 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.17 and an inclination of 2° with respect to the ecliptic. A first precovery was taken by the Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking program in 1996, extending the asteroid's observation arc by 2 years prior to its official discovery observation.[7]NamingThis minor planet was named for Elysia Segal (born 1985), American actress and first-place winner at the 2003 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, for her research analyzing the use of proteoglycans as a potential biomarker for congenital hydrocephalus.[2][3][13] The approved naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 14 June 2004 ({{small|M.P.C. 52173}}).[14] Physical characteristicsLittle is known about Elysiasegal{{'}}s size, composition, albedo and rotation.[16] Based on its absolute magnitude of 14.5, its diameter is likely to be between 3 and 7 kilometers, assuming an albedo in the range of 0.05 to 0.25.[5] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite book |title = Dictionary of Minor Planet Names – (17795) Elysiasegal, Addendum to Fifth Edition: 2003–2005 |last = Schmadel | first = Lutz D. |publisher = Springer Berlin Heidelberg |page = 110 |date = 2006 |isbn = 978-3-540-34361-5 |doi = 10.1007/978-3-540-34361-5_1177 |chapter = (17795) Elysiasegal [2.39, 0.17, 1.7] }} [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]2. ^1 2 {{cite web |title = 17795 Elysiasegal (1998 FJ61) |work = Minor Planet Center |url = http://www.minorplanetcenter.net/db_search/show_object?object_id=17795 |accessdate = 15 November 2016}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |title = MPC/MPO/MPS Archive |work = Minor Planet Center |url = http://www.minorplanetcenter.net/iau/ECS/MPCArchive/MPCArchive_TBL.html |accessdate = 15 November 2016}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web |title = Ceres Connection 2003 Award Honorees |url = http://www.ll.mit.edu/outreach/2003honorees.html#E |publisher = MIT Lincoln Laboratory}} 5. ^1 {{cite web |title = Intel ISEF 2003 Finalist Profile |url = https://apps2.societyforscience.org/abstracts/project.cfm?PID=ME301&Year=2003 |publisher = Society for Science & the Public |accessdate = 1 December 2015}} 6. ^1 2 {{cite web |title = Absolute Magnitude (H) |publisher = NASA/JPL |url = http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/glossary/h.html |accessdate = 15 November 2016}} 7. ^1 {{cite web |title = LCDB Data for (17795) Elysiasegal |publisher = Asteroid Lightcurve Database (LCDB) |url = http://www.minorplanet.info/PHP/GenerateALCDEFPage_Local.php?AstInfo=17795%7CElysiasegal |accessdate = 26 June 2017}} }} External links
