The Rebels were named national champions by the Football Writers Association of America, but not the AP, UPI or NCF who are the other major selectors recognized by the NCAA. While Ole Miss claims a share of two other national titles (both retroactive picks), this is the only one recognized by the NCAA and the college football community at large.[1] Minnesota was crowned as national champion by both major polls before the bowl games;[2] the major media polls would not wait until after the bowls to crown a national champion until 1963. The Rebels were the only major-conference team in the nation that finished the season undefeated on the field (Missouri subsequently was credited with an undefeated season when its one loss was erased by forfeit). ScheduleIn the Egg Bowl, Ole Miss beat Mississippi State, 35–9. Ole Miss held the lead in the series with 29 wins, 24 losses and 4 ties. In the Magnolia Bowl, Ole Miss tied LSU, 6–6. LSU held the lead in the series with 27 wins, 20 losses, and 2 ties. {{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1960 | poll = AP | timezone = Central |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 17 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = 2 | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1960|team=Houston Cougars|title=Houston}} | site_stadium = Rice Stadium | site_cityst = Houston | score = 42–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 24 | w/l = w | rank = 1 | opponent = Kentucky | site_stadium = Crump Stadium | site_cityst = Memphis, Tennessee | score = 21–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 1 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = 1 | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1960|team=Memphis State Tigers|title=Memphis State}} | site_stadium = Crump Stadium | site_cityst = Memphis, Tennessee | score = 31–20 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 8 | w/l = w | away = y | rank = 2 | opponent = Vanderbilt | gamename = Rivalry | site_stadium = Dudley Field | site_cityst = Nashville, Tennessee | score = 21–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 15 | w/l = w | away = y | rank = 1 | opponent = Tulane | site_stadium = Tulane Stadium | site_cityst = New Orleans | score = 26–13 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 22 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = 2 | opponent = Arkansas | opprank = 11 | gamename = Rivalry | site_stadium = War Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Little Rock, Arkansas | score = 10–7 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 29 | w/l = t | rank = 2 | opponent = LSU | gamename = Magnolia Bowl | site_stadium = Hemingway Stadium | site_cityst = Oxford, Mississippi | score = 6–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 5 | w/l = w | rank = 6 | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1960|team=Chattanooga Mocs|title=Chattanooga}} | site_stadium = Hemingway Stadium | site_cityst = Oxford, Mississippi | score = 45–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 12 | w/l = w | away = y | rank = 4 | opponent = Tennessee | opprank = 14 | site_stadium = Shields–Watkins Field | site_cityst = Knoxville, Tennessee | score = 24–3 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 26 | w/l = w | rank = 3 | opponent = Mississippi State | gamename = Egg Bowl | site_stadium = Hemingway Stadium | site_cityst = Oxford, Mississippi | score = 35–9 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = January 2, 1961 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | neutral = y | rank = 2 | opponent = Rice | gamename = Sugar Bowl | site_stadium = Tulane Stadium | site_cityst = New Orleans | score = 14–6 }} }}*Schedule Source:[3] Roster
