释义 |
The by-election for the Great Grimsby took place on 28 April 1977. It was caused by the death of Anthony Crosland, and was retained for Labour by Austin Mitchell. It took place on the same day as the Labour defeat in Ashfield. The result in Grimsby and Ashfield were seen as a surprise as they were the opposite of what had been expected. Grimsby had been expected to fall to the Conservatives, while Labour had expected to hold Ashfield, which they had held by a much larger majority. In the event while there was a swing of 20.9% to the Conservatives in Ashfield, which was just enough to win the seat, the Labour to Conservative swing in Grimsby was only 7% and Mitchell managed to poll more votes than Crossland had at the last election.[1] The Liberal Party lost its deposit in both Grimsby and Ashfield, the third time this had happened at by-election following the 1977 Lib-Lab Pact.[1] {{Election box begin | title=Great Grimsby by-election, 1977[2]}}{{Election box candidate with party link||party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = Austin Mitchell |votes = 21,890 |percentage = 46.88 |change = -0.22 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Conservative Party (UK) |candidate = Robert Blair |votes = 21,370 |percentage = 45.76 |change = +13.85 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Andrew de Freitas |votes = 3,128 |percentage = 6.7 |change = -13.93 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Socialist Workers Party (UK) |candidate = Michael Stanton |votes = 215 |percentage = 0.5 |change = }}{{Election box candidate| |party = Sunshine Party |candidate = Peter Bishop |votes = 64 |percentage = 0.1 |change = }}{{Election box candidate| |party = Malcolm Muggeridge Fan Club |candidate = Max Nottingham |votes = 30 |percentage = 0.0 |change = }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 520 |percentage = 1.12 |change = -14.06 }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = 46,697 |percentage = |change = }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Labour Party (UK) |swing = }}{{Election box end}} At the next election, in 1979, Mitchell increased his majority to 6,241 votes.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite news |last1=Parkhouse |first1=Geoffrey |title=Sensation at the polls |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC&dat=19770429&printsec=frontpage&hl=en |accessdate=21 January 2019 |work=The Glasgow Herald |date=29 April 1977 |page=1}} {{By-elections to the 47th UK Parliament}}{{England-UK-Parl-by-election-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://by-elections.co.uk/77.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131012020902/http://by-elections.co.uk/77.html|title=1977 By Election Results|archive-date=2013-10-12|dead-url=yes|access-date=2015-09-17}} 3. ^{{cite book |title=The Times Guide to the House of Commons May 1979 |date=1979 |publisher=Times Books Ltd |location=London |isbn=0 7230 0225 8 |page=122}} 7 : 1977 in England|Politics of Grimsby|Elections in Lincolnshire|1977 elections in the United Kingdom|April 1977 events in Europe|By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom in Yorkshire and the Humber constituencies|Humberside |
