The team had a 10–6 record in 1981. It was a strike-shortened season so the league was divided up into two conferences instead of its normal divisional alignment. It ended with a second round loss to the Dolphins. This would be the team's last playoff appearance until 1992. The 1982 Chargers were the top-scoring team in the NFL. They scored a total of 288 points, 32 per game. They led the league in passing touchdowns (19), rushing touchdowns (15, tied with the Raiders) passing yards (2,927), and yards per attempt (8.9). The Chargers defense, however, surrendered the most passing yards (2,292), and second-most first downs (119) in the league.[4] Chargers quarterback Dan Fouts was named the Pro Football Writers of America MVP, and 1982 AP Offensive Player of the Year.[5] Wide receiver Wes Chandler, tight end Kellen Winslow, and guard Doug Wilkerson all made first-team All-Pro. 1982 NFL Draft{{main|1982 NFL Draft}}{{NFL team draft start|teamname=San Diego Chargers |year=1982 }}{{NFL team draft entry | round = 8 | pick = 215 | player = Maury Buford | position = Punter | college = Texas Tech | notes = | maderoster = yes | hof = | probowl = }}{{NFL team draft end}} Roster{{NFL final roster| year = 1982 | team = San Diego Chargers | prefix = | active = | inactive = | PS = | quarterbacks ={{NFLplayer|14|Dan Fouts}}{{NFLplayer|11|Ed Luther}} | running_backs ={{NFLplayer|37|Hank Bauer|d=American football}}{{NFLplayer|21|James Brooks|d=American football}}{{NFLplayer|25|John Cappelletti}}{{NFLplayer|40|Jim Jodat}}{{NFLplayer|46|Chuck Muncie}} | wide_receivers ={{NFLplayer|89|Wes Chandler}}{{NFLplayer|82|Bobby Duckworth|rookie=y}}{{NFLplayer|81|Scott Fitzkee}}{{NFLplayer|18|Charlie Joiner}}{{NFLplayer|87|Dwight Scales}} | tight_ends ={{NFLplayer|88|Pete Holohan}}{{NFLplayer|85|Eric Sievers}}{{NFLplayer|80|Kellen Winslow}} | offensive_linemen ={{NFLplayer|77|Sam Claphan|T}}{{NFLplayer|62|Don Macek|C}}{{NFLplayer|60|Dennis McKnight|rookie=y|G}}{{NFLplayer|56|Bob Rush|d=American football|C}}{{NFLplayer|66|Billy Shields|T}}{{NFLplayer|70|Russ Washington|T}}{{NFLplayer|67|Ed White|d=American football|G}}{{NFLplayer|63|Doug Wilkerson|G}} | defensive_linemen ={{NFLplayer|76|Keith Ferguson|d=American football|DE}}{{NFLplayer|79|Gary Johnson|d=American football|DT}}{{NFLplayer|68|Leroy Jones|d=American football|DE}}{{NFLplayer|74|Louie Kelcher|DT}}{{NFLplayer|90|John Woodcock|d=American football|DE}}{{NFLplayer|99|Wilbur Young|DE}} | linebackers ={{NFLplayer|50|Carlos Bradley}}{{NFLplayer|57|Linden King}}{{NFLplayer|53|Dave Lewis|d=linebacker}}{{NFLplayer|51|Woodrow Lowe}}{{NFLplayer|52|Ray Preston|d=American football}}{{NFLplayer|58|Dewey Selmon}}{{NFLplayer|59|Cliff Thrift}} | defensive_backs ={{NFLplayer|27|Jeff Allen|d=gridiron football|CB}}{{NFLplayer|28|Willie Buchanon|CB}}{{NFLplayer|26|Donald Dykes|CB}}{{NFLplayer|48|Tim Fox|d=American football|FS}}{{NFLplayer|43|Bob Gregor}}{{NFLplayer|30|Bruce Laird|d=American football|SS}}{{NFLplayer|29|Mike Williams|d=cornerback|CB}}{{NFLplayer|49|Andre Young|d=American football|rookie=y}} | special_teams ={{NFLplayer| 6|Rolf Benirschke|K}}{{NFLplayer| 8|Maury Buford|rookie=y|P}} | reserve_lists = | practice_squad = }} Schedule
