Ten teams had been promoted from lower league, whereas two had been relegated from upper league. Season was started on 16 August 1987 and ended on 29 May 1988. Among the teams three groups of Second League, teams through 2nd to 6th in previous year, in addition to those relegated from upper league and those promoted from lower league were qualified to play in the Cup. Mersin İdmanyurdu did not participate in 1987–88 Turkish Cup, because they had finished previous season at 11th place in Second League Red Group.
