The 1998 Prankote massacre was the killing of 26 Hindus in the villages of Prankote and Dakikote in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on 17 April 1998.[1] BackgroundIn 1990, the majority of the 250,000 Pandit population left Kashmir after being selectively targeted by Islamist terrorists. Most live in refugee camps in Jammu. The attackSurvivors said that the killers struck when the villagers refused demands from the terrorists to convert to Islam and prove their conversion by eating beef.[2][3] On refusal to convert, all the 26 people including women and children were beheaded.[1] Seven members were charred beyond recognition when their house was set on fire.[1] AftermathIt took 10 hours for news to reach the authorities and security forces reached only after a day.[4][5] Then Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said "This a shocking incident. I have seen tragedies earlier, but this was bloodcurdling. No bullets were fired, the villagers were butchered."[6] The massacre forced migration of nearly 1,000 people to Reasi, Pouni Thanpal, Chasana and other towns of the district.[7] In April 2008, the alleged mastermind Abdul Haque alias Jahangir, a militant belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen, was shot dead by Indian security forces.[8] References1. ^1 2 {{Cite web|url=http://www.rediff.com/news/1998/apr/20jammu.htm|title=26 Hindu villagers butchered in Jammu|last=|first=|date=|website=www.rediff.com|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2018-05-27}} {{coord missing|Jammu and Kashmir}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Prankote Massacre}}2. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.dailypioneer.com/columnists/ite/ignoring-spirit-of-the-law.html|title=Ignoring spirit of the law|last=Pioneer|first=The|work=The Pioneer|access-date=2018-05-27|language=en}} 3. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1998/06/20/world/gunmen-kill-25-hindus-in-kashmir-attacks.html|title=Gunmen Kill 25 Hindus in Kashmir Attacks|last=Burns|first=John F.|date=1998-06-20|work=The New York Times|access-date=2018-05-27|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}} 4. ^{{cite magazine|last=|first=|date=20 June – 3 July 1998|title=A new front in the proxy war|url=http://www.hinduonnet.com/fline/fl1513/15130180.htm|dead-url=yes|magazine=Frontline|volume=15|issue=13|doi=|pmid=|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20020404203711/http://www.hinduonnet.com/fline/fl1513/15130180.htm|archive-date=4 April 2002|accessdate=27 May 2018|work=}} 5. ^Hired Gun, India Today, 4 May 1998 6. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.jammu-kashmir.com/archives/archives1998/98april21a.html|title=Kashmir Terrorists Behead 26 Hindus in Prankote|website=www.jammu-kashmir.com|access-date=2018-05-27}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.rediff.com/news/1998/aug/06kash.htm|title=Jammu averages 50 killings a month|last=|first=|date=|website=www.rediff.com|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2018-05-27}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.tribuneindia.com/2008/20080424/main2.htm|title=The Tribune, Chandigarh, India - Main News|website=www.tribuneindia.com|access-date=2018-05-27}} 11 : Terrorist incidents in India in 1998|Mass murder in 1998|Islamic terrorism in India|Massacres in India|Udhampur district|1990s in Jammu and Kashmir|Religiously motivated violence in India|Terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir|Massacres in Jammu and Kashmir|April 1998 events|Islamic terrorist incidents in 1998 |
