The 1999 Stratford-on-Avon District Council election took place on 6 May 1999 to elect members of Stratford-on-Avon District Council in Warwickshire, England. One third of the council was up for election and the council stayed under no overall control.[1] After the election, the composition of the council was
CampaignBefore the election the Liberal Democrats ran the council as a minority administration with the support of the independents.[3] The Liberal Democrats held 23 seats, compared to 18 for the Conservatives, 9 independents and 5 Labour seats.[4] 19 seats were contested in the election with both the Liberal Democrats and independents defending 7, compared to only 3 for the Conservatives and 2 for Labour.[4] The Conservatives were hoping to gain the 10 seats they needed in to win a majority on the council and pledged to sort out the finances of the council, increase CCTV and improve the management of tourism.[4] However the Liberal Democrats defended their record in control of the council saying that they had eliminated the council's debts, while reducing council tax levels to the lowest yet.[4] Meanwhile, Labour were aiming to make a couple of gains and said they would try and ensure more of the council's money was spent outside of the town centre.[4] Election resultThe results saw the Conservatives become the largest party on the council with 24 seats after making 6 gains, but failed to win a majority.[5] This meant that the independents, despite losing 2 seats, held the balance of power on the council with 7 councillors.[6] {{Election Summary Begin|title = Stratford-on-Avon Local Election Result 1999[7]}}{{Election Summary Party||party = Conservative Party (UK) |seats = 9 |gain = |loss = |net = +6 |seats % = 47.4 |votes % = |votes = |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Liberal Democrats (UK) |seats = 5 |gain = |loss = |net = -3 |seats % = 26.3 |votes % = |votes = |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independent (politician) |seats = 4 |gain = |loss = |net = -2 |seats % = 21.1 |votes % = |votes = |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Labour Party (UK) |seats = 1 |gain = |loss = |net = -1 |seats % = 5.3 |votes % = |votes = |plus/minus = }}{{Election box end}} References1. ^{{cite web| url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/vote_99/locals_99/html/constituency/249.stm | title = Stratford-on-Avon | accessdate = 2010-03-12 | publisher = BBC News Online}} {{Warwickshire elections}}{{United Kingdom local elections, 1999}}2. ^{{cite news | title = Britain votes: Local Council Election Results | publisher = The Independent | page = 12 | date = 1999-05-07 }} 3. ^{{cite news | first = Boris | last = Worrall | title = Labour fearing the worst as town hall battles loom | publisher = Birmingham Post | page = 4 | date = 1999-04-13 }} 4. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news | first = Deborah | last = Summers | title = Much ado about the battle for council power | publisher = Birmingham Post | page = 4 | date = 1999-04-23 }} 5. ^{{cite news | title = Success for hospital campaigners as town turns | publisher = Birmingham Post | page = 7 | date = 1999-05-07 }} 6. ^{{cite news | title = At-a-glance guide to how the councils stand | publisher = Birmingham Post | page = 3 | date = 1999-05-08 }} 7. ^{{cite news | title = How the nations voted | publisher = The Times | page = 48 | date = 1999-05-08 }} 3 : 1999 English local elections|Stratford-on-Avon District Council elections|20th century in Warwickshire |
