The match determined the third and final team to gain promotion from First Division to the Premier League, and was contested by Birmingham City, who finished fifth during the league season, and Norwich City, who finished sixth. The teams reached the final by defeating Millwall and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively in the two-legged semi-finals.
