Voting procedureThe three field umpires (those umpires who control the flow of the game, as opposed to goal or boundary umpires) confer after each match and award three votes, two votes and one vote to the players they regard as the best, second best and third best in the match, respectively. The votes are kept secret until the awards night, and are read and tallied on the evening. Ineligible playersAs the medal is awarded to the fairest and best player in the league, those who have been suspended during the season by the AFL Tribunal (or, who avoided suspension only because of a discount for a good record or an early guilty plea) are ineligible to win the award; however, they may still continue to poll votes. Some Australian rules football journalists argued that Judd was lucky to escape any AFL Tribunal action following an incident involving {{AFL Fre}}'s Matthew Pavlich in round 13, where Judd elbowed Pavlich in the face.[4][5] Additionally, Judd served a three-match suspension during the 2010 season, but because the incident for which he was suspended took place in the 2009 finals, this did not affect his eligibility.[6] References1. ^{{cite book|title=AFL Record Season Guide 2016|editor=Lovett, Michael|publisher=Slattery Media Group|location=Docklands, Victoria|pages=593}} {{Brownlow Medal}}{{2010 AFL season}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Brownlow Medal}}{{AFL-stub}}2. ^{{citeweb|title=2010 Brownlow Medal|url=http://afltables.com/afl/brownlow/brownlow2010.html|publisher=AFL Tables|accessdate=8 November 2016}} 3. ^2010 Brownlow Medal broadcast guide {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111014093731/http://www.afl.com.au/broadcast%20guide/tabid/9451/default.aspx |date=14 October 2011 }} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/match-review-panel-got-it-wrong-on-chris-judd-mike-sheahan/story-e6frf9jf-1225882487384|title=Match review panel got it wrong on Chris Judd: Mike Sheahan |last=Sheehan|first=Mike|date=22 June 2010|work=Herald Sun|publisher=News Corp Australia|accessdate=21 September 2010}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.examiner.com.au/news/local/sport/general/a-fair-call-fortune-smiles-on-brownlow-winner-chris-judd/1947742.aspx|title=Fortune smiles on Brownlow winner Chris Judd|last=Fair|first=Mike|date=21 September 2010|work=The Examiner (Tasmania)|publisher=Fairfax Media|accessdate=21 September 2010}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/no-brownlow-blues-for-chris-judd/story-fn422eni-1225770403254|title=No Brownlow blues for Chris Judd|last=Matthews|first=Bruce|date=8 September 2009|work=Herald Sun|publisher=News Corp Australia|accessdate=}} 3 : 2010 in Australian rules football|2010 Australian Football League season|Brownlow Medal |
