It is responsible for installing, maintaining and operating all types of telecommunications equipment and information systems in support of 16 Air Assault Brigade. 216 Parachute Signal Squadron provide OpCIS and TacCIS to the Bde Comd and his staff. HistoryThe squadron is the predecessor of the Second World War airborne signals unit, 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade Group Signal Company (1943–1945), and the post-Second World War airborne signals unit, 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade Signal Squadron (1947–1948).[1] The 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade Signal Squadron was reformed as 16th Independent Parachute Brigade Group Signal Squadron (1948–1960).[2] 216 Parachute Signal Squadron was formed on 1st September 1959: it became 216 Parachute Signal Squadron in 1965 and it was deployed in operations in Cyprus, Bahrain, Aden, Borneo, British Guyana and Northern Ireland. In 1977, HQ 16 Parachute Brigade and 216 Parachute Signal Squadron amalgamated to form 6th Field Force Headquarters and Signal Squadron.[3] The Signal Squadron was retitled as 1st Infantry Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron (216), losing its airborne status, in 1981. In 1982, personnel from the Squadron formed part of the Operation Corporate task force deployed to the South Atlantic. In June 1999, as part of 5 Airborne Brigade, were among the first troops into the Kosovo under NATO command.[1] Elements of the 5 Airborne Brigade and 24 Airmobile Brigade brigade signal squadrons formed up on 1 September 1999 in both Colchester and Pristina, Kosovo as 216 Signal Squadron.[4] Operations
