This was changed in 1956 when the FIAPF granted Berlin "A-Status" during that year.[1][2] Golden Bear was awarded to Swedish film Hon dansade en sommar by audience vote.[5] Orson Welles's Othello was banned from the festival due to his alleged anti-German remarks.[3] The festival held a retrospective on silent films.[4]Films in competitionThe following films were in competition for the Golden Bear and Silver Bear awards:[5]
