The genus name Aaata has been described as a synonym to two species in the Microcionidae family of sea sponges (Demospongiae). The two species being:

The above are synonyms for Clathria brepha and Clathria spongigartina respectively (de Laubenfels, 1930).^[16]^[17]^[18] The two later names are now the currently accepted definitions for the species.^[19]^[20]
