After a brief career as a VJ on Channel V, Kapur began his film career with the commercially unsuccessful musical comedy London Dreams (2009), a critical and commercial failure. Subsequently, he starred in a series of films that under-performed at the box-office, but earned praise for portraying a man wanting to learn magic in the romance Guzaarish (2010). The top-grossing musical romance Aashiqui 2 (2013), in which Kapur played the lead role of a singer, was his first commercial success, and also marked a turning point in his career, garnering him various acting awards and nominations at several award ceremonies. Later that year, he starred in the romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Both films emerged as one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2013. Kapur followed this with portraying lead roles in several commercial failures, including a renowned restaurant owner in the comedy Daawat-e-Ishq (2014), a middle-class Kashmiri boy in the romance Fitoor (2016), and a video game developer in the romantic comedy OK Jaanu (2017). Early life and backgroundAditya Roy Kapur was born in Mumbai on 16 November 1985[1] to a Punjabi Hindu father,[2] Kumud Roy Kapur, and an Indian Jewish mother, Salome Aaron.[3] His grandfather, Raghupat Roy Kapur, was a film producer.[4][5] Kapur is the youngest of the three siblings- his eldest brother, Siddharth Roy Kapur, was the Chief Executive Officer of UTV Motion Pictures His maternal grandparents, Sam and Ruby Aaron, were qualified dance teachers who introduced the Sama dance to India.[4] He did his schooling from G. D. Somani Memorial School, in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, where all his siblings studied and his mother directed school plays.[4] Subsequently, he graduated from St. Xavier's College, affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Kapur is not a trained actor, though he has taken dance lessons and also diction classes to improve his Hindi accent. According to him he "had no burning ambition to become an actor," and was content being a VJ, until he was called to audition for London Dreams. During his school years, he wanted to be a cricketer but he quit cricket coaching classes after sixth standard. CareerFilm debut and initial struggle (2009–2010)Kapur started his career as a VJ on music channel Channel V India, where his comic timing and "unique style of hosting" made him a hit. He did a show "Pakao" for Channel V, and also hosted the hugely popular, 'India's hottest' show with fellow VJ, Bruna Abdullah.[7] Later he made his film debut in 2009 playing a minor role in Vipul Shah's musical drama, London Dreams, starring alongside Salman Khan, Asin and Ajay Devgan. The film was not well received by critics, and was a box office flop. Kapur was next seen in the science fiction romantic comedy, Action Replayy (2010), a remake of Back to the Future, starring Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai, which was also directed by Vipul Shah. The movie was a critical and commercial failure. He next appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's bittersweet drama, Guzaarish (2010), starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. The film earned mixed to positive reviews from critics and although not a massive hit it was commercially profitable. Breakthrough (2013–present)His next role was in Ayan Mukerji's coming-of-age romantic comedy, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Kalki Koechlin. Kapur's performance earned him positive reviews and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film itself received mixed to positive reviews from critics, and became the fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2013. Kapur was next seen opposite Parineeti Chopra in Habib Faisal's romantic dramedy, Daawat-e-Ishq (2014). He then starred opposite Katrina Kaif in Abhishek Kapoor's romantic drama, Fitoor (2016), an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. Neither of these films performed well at the box office. In 2016, Kapur made a guest appearance in Gauri Shinde's, Dear Zindagi, starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan, which was released in November 2016.[9] Towards the end of 2016, he completed filming for Shaad Ali's romance, Ok Jaanu, opposite Shraddha Kapoor again. The film, a Hindi remake of the Tamil film, O Kadhal Kanmani, released in January 2017.[10] He next appeared in the comedy Welcome To New York (2018) alongside Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh. But the film also flopped at the box office. As of March 2019, Kapur has four upcoming projects. He will first appear in Karan Johar's period drama Kalank, co-starring Alia Bhatt, Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Varun Dhawan and Sanjay Dutt. He will also feature in Mohit Suri's romantic horror film Malang, featuring an ensemble cast of Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemu. He will then star in a sequel to the Mahesh Bhatt directed-romantic thriller Sadak (1991), entitled Sadak 2, which will co-star Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt. He has also committed to feature in Anurag Basu's as-yet ensemble drama, co-starring Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao.
