Akinator is an computer game and mobile app by French company Elokence.com. During gameplay, it attempts to determine what fictional or real-life "character" the player is thinking of by asking a series of questions (in a manner similar to the game Twenty Questions). It uses an artificial intelligence program that learns the best questions to ask through its experience with players.

Gameplay

In order to begin the questionnaire, the user must press the play button and think of a popular character, Object or other things which may frequently come to mind (musician, athlete, political personality, video game, mother or father, actor, fictional film/TV character, Internet personality, etc). Akinator, a cartoon genie, begins asking a series of questions (as many as required), with "Yes", "No", "Probably", "Probably not" and "Don't know" as possible answers, in order to hack down the potential character.[1][2] If the answer is narrowed down to a single likely option before 20 questions are asked, the program will automatically ask if the character it chose is correct. If the character is guessed wrong three times in a row, then the program will prompt the user to input the character's name, in order to expand its database of choices.[3] It predicts the answer based on the tree match algorithm. "Aki Awards" can be rewarded for guessing a new Character.{{citation needed|date=May 2016}} An update allowed the user to purchase VIP and clothing with in-game currency. Although, things such as animals or objects will not be counted as a real character, even when akinator says it is, and players can decide if they are characters or not based on the rules given to them.

Critical reception

L'Express rated Akinator a 5 out of 5 on their list of iPhone Apps of the Week for September 9, 2009.[4] Excite France stated that Akinator "is just that interactive. It is revolutionary, attractive, and entertaining."[5]

In Europe, the game reached its peak popularity in 2009.[1]
