It is very closely related to the more common A. subrubescens,[1] from which it may be distinguished microscopically by the amyloid spore wall. It is edible and sold commercially in Finland.[2] Similar speciesA fuller discussion of the small color differences from the inedible Albatrellus subrubescens can be found at that extensive article. Microscopically, the spores of A. subrubescens are amyloid, while the ones of A. ovinus are not.[3][4] References1. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Hibbett DS, Pine EM, Langer E, Langer G, Donoghue MJ |title=Evolution of gilled mushrooms and puffballs inferred from ribosomal DNA sequences |journal=Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America|volume=94 |issue=22 |pages=12002–6 |year=1997|pmid=9342352 |pmc=23683 |doi= 10.1073/pnas.94.22.12002|url=http://www.pnas.org/cgi/pmidlookup?view=long&pmid=9342352 |accessdate=2008-11-11}} 2. ^{{cite book|last=Pelkonen|first=Riina|last2=Alfthan|first2=Georg|last3=Järvinen|first3=Olli|title=Element Concentrations in Wild Edible Mushrooms in Finland|publisher=Finnish Environment Institute|location=Helsinki|year=2008|pages=32|isbn=978-952-11-3153-0|url=http://www.ymparisto.fi/download.asp?contentid=87635|accessdate=2009-02-20|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110928125244/http://www.ymparisto.fi/download.asp?contentid=87635|archive-date=2011-09-28|dead-url=yes|df=}} 3. ^W.
