Alpha is located {{convert|2|mi|km|1}} south-southeast of Washington.[2] It is situated at an elevation of {{convert|4120|ft|m|abbr=on}} above sea level.[3] Alpha had a post office during the period of 1855–1862.[4] The Alpha Hydraulic Diggings were {{convert|1|mi|km}} south of the town. GoldGold was discovered at the place 1850; settlers arrived in 1852.[2] In gold rush days, the town's nickname was "Hell Out for High Noon City".[2] Notable residents
