It was released by Warp on March 8, 2010.[1] The album was produced by Flying Lotus, The Gaslamp Killer, and Mainframe. Ecks said of the album: "I didn't want it to be too easy for the listener. I wanted it to hurt a little bit. I wanted it to get into a spot in the head that hasn't been hit".[2] Of its title he said "The Sufi side of life has helped me with my killer side so I try not to attach myself to any label. There's a Sufi and a killer in everybody, man, and I'll be whatever I have to be just to make it through".[2] Reception{{Album ratings| MC = 78/100[3] | rev1 = AllMusic | rev1Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[4] | rev2 = Clash | rev2Score = 7/10[5] | rev3 = The Guardian | rev3Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[6] | rev4 = The Irish Times | rev4Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[7] | rev5 = Mojo | rev5Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[8] | rev6 = MusicOMH | rev6Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[9] | rev7 = Pitchfork | rev7Score = 8.4/10[10] | rev8 = PopMatters | rev8Score = 6/10[11] | rev9 = Q | rev9Score = {{Rating|3|5}}[12] | rev10 = Uncut | rev10Score = {{Rating|3|5}}[13] | noprose = yes }} At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, A Sufi and a Killer received an average score of 78 based on 16 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[3] The album garnered much positive critical coverage on its release. AllMusic's Jason Lymangrover gave the album four stars out of five, describing it as "weird, ‘60s-rooted, psychedelic hip-hop", sounding "like if J. Dilla produced George Clinton after visiting with the Dalai Lama, or if Dan the Automator recorded Cody Chesnutt after the two shared a plate of magic mushrooms", and calling it "truly visionary".[4] The BBC described it as "a stunning, genre-transcending record" and "a terrific, trippy adventure".[14] Drowned in Sound gave the album 7/10, describing Ecks' voice as "a hugely versatile instrument, every bit as unique and distinctive as that of Björk or Tom Waits", and calling the album "a fascinating glimpse of a character continually in transition".[15] The Guardian called it "one of the strangest and most eclectic records you'll hear all year",[2] and "an album that practically has a green smog drifting above it".[6] Clash gave it 7/10, stating "repeated plays reveal an irresistible talent".[5] PopMatters gave it 6/10, with reviewer David Amidon stating "I've listened to this album a lot just trying to make sense of it...and have walked away mostly pleased".[11] A Sufi and a Killer ranked at number 41 on Tiny Mix Tapes{{'}} "Favorite 50 Albums of 2010" list.[16] It ranked at number 14 on The Wire{{'}}s "2010 Rewind" list.[17]Track listing{{Track listing| all_writing = Gonjasufi | extra_column = Producer(s) | title1 = Untitled (Bharatanatyam) | extra1 = The Gaslamp Killer | length1 = 0:55 | title2 = Kobwebz | extra2 = The Gaslamp Killer | length2 = 2:13 | title3 = Ancestors | extra3 = Flying Lotus | length3 = 2:36 | title4 = Sheep | extra4 = The Gaslamp Killer | length4 = 4:03 | title5 = She Gone | extra5 = The Gaslamp Killer | length5 = 2:45 | title6 = SuzieQ | extra6 = The Gaslamp Killer | length6 = 1:44 | title7 = Stardustin | extra7 = The Gaslamp Killer | length7 = 1:04 | title8 = Kowboyz&Indians | extra8 = The Gaslamp Killer | length8 = 2:43 | title9 = Change | extra9 = The Gaslamp Killer | length9 = 2:04 | title10 = Duet | extra10 = The Gaslamp Killer | length10 = 3:06 | title11 = Candylane | extra11 = Mainframe | length11 = 2:07 | title12 = Holidays | extra12 = Mainframe | length12 = 3:57 | title13 = Love of Reign | extra13 = Mainframe | length13 = 2:39 | title14 = Advice | extra14 = Mainframe | length14 = 2:45 | title15 = Klowds | extra15 = The Gaslamp Killer | length15 = 3:28 | title16 = Ageing | extra16 = The Gaslamp Killer | length16 = 2:42 | title17 = DedNd | extra17 = The Gaslamp Killer | length17 = 3:38 | title18 = I've Given | extra18 = The Gaslamp Killer | length18 = 3:35 | title19 = Made / Dobermins | extra19 = The Gaslamp Killer | length19 = 10:45 }} Charts
