It's located about {{convert|4|km|0|abbr=on}} southwest of Haljala, the administrative centre of the municipality, and about {{convert|11|km|0|abbr=on}} northwest of the town of Rakvere. As of 2011 Census, the settlement's population was 59.[1] In 1861 a local 3-grade school started operating in Auküla. But in 1930 it was closed due to economical crises. Nowadays the schoolhouse is used as a residential building.
