}}Avery is a given name which was originally an English surname that was itself derived from an Old French pronunciation of the name Alfred[1] or the Ancient Germanic name Alberich.[2] The meaning of the name is derived from the Old English words aelf, meaning elf, and ric, meaning ruler, power.[2] Elves were considered exceptionally beautiful magical beings.[2]Avery was originally more common as a boys' name, but it is becoming more popular and more common as a girls' name. The name entered top 20 most common name for girls born in the United States in 2011, peaking at number 12 in 2013.
