释义 |
On January 13, 1985, an express train derailed on a curving bridge over the gorge of the Awash River at Awash, Ethiopia. The official death toll was 428, with more than 500 injuries. It was the worst train crash in Africa. AccidentThe train was an express traveling from Dire Dawa to Addis Ababa on the rail line from Djibouti, with approximately 1,000 passengers. Crossing the bridge over the ravine at Awash, which is {{convert|40|ft|m}} long and curving, four cars derailed, beginning with the rear car, and fell into the ravine.[1][2][3][4][5] Initial reports were that as many as 449 had been killed;[2][3] Ethiopian radio later reported 428 deaths.[6] More than 500 were said to have been injured.[4] It was the most deadly train crash in Africa and at the time the third worst train accident worldwide.[1][2][3][5][7] CauseThe Ethiopian Ministry of Transportation blamed the crash on excessive speed at the curve; the driver was arrested.[2][3][8][7] References1. ^1 {{cite news |url=http://www.upi.com/Archives/1985/01/14/A-passenger-train-traveling-through-Ethiopia-hurtled-off-the/6499474526800/ |title=A passenger train traveling through Ethiopia hurtled off the... |publisher=United Press International |date=January 14, 1985 }} {{1985 railway accidents}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite news |first=Clifford D. |last=May |url=https://www.nytimes.com/1985/01/15/world/ethiopian-train-falls-off-bridge-392-are-killed.html |title=Ethiopian train falls off bridge; 392 are killed |newspaper=The New York Times |date=January 15, 1985 }} 3. ^1 2 3 {{cite news |url=http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1985/01/15/page/1/article/rail-crash-toll-may-pass-400-in-ethiopia |title=Rail-crash toll may pass 400 in Ethiopia |newspaper=Chicago Tribune |date=January 15, 1985 |page=1 }} 4. ^1 {{cite news |url=http://articles.latimes.com/1985-01-14/news/mn-9747_1_ethiopian-official |title=Train Derails in Ethiopia, 418 Die : 559 Injured; Officials Fear Wreck May Slow Famine Relief |newspaper=Los Angeles Times |date=January 14, 1985 |agency=Associated Press }} 5. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.railway-technology.com/features/featurethe-worlds-deadliest-train-accidents-4150911/ |title=The world's worst train disasters |website=Railway Technology.com |date=January 2, 2014 }} 6. ^{{cite news |agency=Associated Press |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1696&dat=19850117&id=1hIbAAAAIBAJ&sjid=I0gEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5736,2886877 |title=428 dead |newspaper=Daily News |location=Bowling Green, Kentucky |date=January 17, 1985 |page=8A }} 7. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/express-train-derails-ethiopia-killing-estimated-400-people |title=Express train derails in Ethiopia, killing an estimated 400 people |website=South African History Online |date=January 3, 2012 }} 8. ^{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2194&dat=19850115&id=irwyAAAAIBAJ&sjid=We8FAAAAIBAJ&pg=1282,2264238 |title=Driver blamed for train crash |newspaper=Ottawa Citizen |agency=Canadian Press |date=January 15, 1985 |page=A7 }} 7 : Railway accidents in 1985|Derailments|Awash River|Rail transport in Ethiopia|Bridge disasters|1985 in Ethiopia|January 1985 events |
