It was part of the Hawes Branch of the North Eastern Railway from its opening in 1878 until closure in April 1954. The Wensleydale Railway Association aims to rebuild the railway from Northallerton (from its current western terminus at Redmire) to Garsdale and plans to re-open the station. HistoryOpened by the North Eastern Railway in 1878, it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The line then passed to the North Eastern Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. It was closed by the British Transport Commission in April 1954, although goods traffic continued until the Redmire to Hawes section closed to all traffic in 1964. Aysgarth site todayThe track has been lifted through the station site. The station site has now been sold on into private hands after The Wensleydale Railway stated that it was costing too much to keep on their books.[1] The nearest track on the line runs from Redmire eastward, providing rail access for military traffic to local training areas. The Wensleydale Railway is a heritage line which operates from Redmire to Leeming Bar and {{stnlnk|Northallerton West}}.[2] {{Disused Rail Start}}{{rail line |next=RedmireLine closed, station open |previous=Askrigg Line and station closed |route=North Eastern Railway Hawes Branch |col={{NER colour}} }}{{Future Heritage Rail Insert}}{{rail line|next=Redmire Line closed, station open |previous=Askrigg Line and station closed |route=Wensleydale Railway |col={{heritage rail colour|line=Wensleydale Railway}} }}{{s-end}} References1. ^{{cite news|last1=Flanagan|first1=Emily|title=Heritage railway decides to sell historic station in bid to develop ten-mile steam line|url=http://www.darlingtonandstocktontimes.co.uk/news/15538432.Heritage_railway_decides_to_sell_historic_station_in_bid_to_develop_ten_mile_steam_line/|accessdate=20 October 2017|work=Darlington and Stockton Times|date=15 September 2017}} 2. ^{{cite news|last1=Gleeson|first1=Janet|title=Station sale plans spark fears for the future of Wensleydale Railway|url=http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/15496139.Station_sale_plans_spark_fears_for_the_future_of_Wensleydale_Railway/|accessdate=20 October 2017|work=York Press|date=25 August 2017}}
