Balsi is a village in Kesinga Block Kalahandi district in the India state of Odisha, near the east coast of India.

Balsi is the Popular village positioned in Kesinga Block of Kalahandi district in Odisha. Positioned in rural area of Kalahandi district of Odisha, it is one among the 4 villages of Balsi Panchayat of Kalahandi district. As per the administration register, the village number of Balsi is 422360. The village has 510 homes.

According to Census 2011, Balsi's population is 3169. Out of this, 60% are males while the females count 40% here. This village has 254 kids in the age group of 0–6 years. Out of this 134 are boys and 120 are girls.

Geography

Balsi is located at {{Coord|20.2|N|83.23|E|}}.[1] It has an average elevation of {{convert|187|m}}.Another landmark of Balsi is Kandadangar Hill (old mountain) at the Last of the Village. This mountain has a profound effect on the climate of Balsi.

Transport

Kandel Road Railway Station is the major railhead in Balsi Village.It is 12 km nearest considered as the gateway of Kalahandi.

National Highway 26 passes through the Kesinga.Balsi is well connected to major cities and towns in Odisha.Balsi to Kesinga is {{convert|14|km}} by the road of PMGSY.

Economy

The Balsi Village is Famous for Peda and Khuaa.

Apart from being a railhead for the region, Kesinga also serves as the place of enormous business activity. It is the economic heart of the surrounding area, where farmers can get a fair price for produce. There are scores of rice mills in Kesinga. A godown of FCI gives the storage facility for farmers and rice mill owners.

Language and literature

The language spoken by the people of Kalahandi is the Kalahandia dialect of Oriya, locally known as Kalahandia . Local weekly newspapers such as Arjji and Kalahandi Express publish articles in standard Odia and Kalahandia language. Other languages include Kui, Bhatri (another dialect of Odia), Parji, Bhunjia, spoken by approximately 7000 Bhunjia Adivasis.

  • Dasra (Dasara) : Dasara or Durga Puja is celebrated among Hindu all over India, but it is very popular in Eastern part of India including West Bengal, Odisha, Assam etc. However, goddess Durga is known as Shaki (Energy) and most of the goddess based on tribal and Shaki is inspired from goddess Durga. The major goddess of Kalahandi including Manikeswari, Lankeswari, Denteswari, Khameswari, Bhandargharen etc. are seen as a reflection of goddess Durga and most of the major festivals like Chhatar Jatra, Kkandabasha, Budharaja Jatra, etc. are celebrated during Dusra. Dusra is significant in all the Skati Pitha in Kalahandi and is one of the popular festival in the region.
  • Kalahandi Utsav "Ghumura" : It is hosted in Lal Bahadur Shastri stadium
  • Diel or Deepawali : Also popularly known as Diwali is celebrated in Kalahandi. But this is getting popular due to immigrant business community mainly from Marwadi community, however, slowly it has entered the local stream.
  • Rathajatra : The festival of Rathjatra is inspired from Rathajatra in Puri. Since independence when Kalahandi became part of Odisha state the dominance of coastal Oriya culture has influenced Kalahandi. Number of new Jagganath temples have come over Kalahandi since 1950 and celebration of Rathajatra is increasing realised. This is also boosted by immigrant business community and Government officials from coastal Odisha and Berhampur region.
  • Nuakhai : This is typically a local festival prevalent in Western Odisha including Kalahandi. It is inspired from harvesting of new crops and historically came from tribal. But now everybody irrespective of caste, creed and religion celebrate it. There are many kinds of Nuakhai according to tribal culture, out of which Dhan (Rice) Nuakhai is most popularly celebrated.
  • The Chhatra Yatra of Goddess Manikeswari of Bhawanipatna, a popular ceremony. (October)

Power and transmission

There is a 132/33 kV Grid Station near OMFED diary on SH-16. Power to this grid comes directly from Therubali Grid.

Power transmission and maintenance is done by Grid Corporation of Odisha.

There is also a sub-station in Naktiguda, Bhawanipatna. It is maintained by Western Electricity Supply Company of Odisha
