Its headquarters are in the town of Bama. It has an area of 4,997 km2 and a population of 269,986 at the 2006 census. The postal code of the area is 610.[1] It is located "about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state".[2] It is one of the sixteen LGAs that constitute the Dikwa Emirate, a traditional state located in Borno State, Nigeria.[3] HistoryThe town was attacked by Boko Haram in May 2013 and February 2014.[4][5] {{As of|2014|June|22}},
On September 2, 2014, Boko Haram seized control of Bama, according to the town's residents.[7] In December 2014, it was reported that "people too elderly to flee Gwoza Local Government Area were being rounded up and taken to two schools where the militants opened fire on them." Over 50 elderly people were killed.[8] A "gory video" was released of insurgents shooting over a hundred civilians in a school dormitory in the town of Bama.[9] On 16 March 2015, the Nigerian army said that it had recaptured the city.[10] On 22 June 2016, the NGO Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) reported a "catastrophic humanitarian emergency" in a camp for refugees fleeing Boko Haram near the town of Bama.[11][12] They stated that more than 1,200 people have died of starvation and illness at the camp.[13] They also reported that between 23 May 2016 and 22 June 2016, at least 188 people have died at the camp (almost six per day), mainly from malnutrition and diarrhoea.[11] References1. ^{{cite web | title = Post Offices- with map of LGA | work = | publisher = NIPOST | url = http://www.nipost.gov.ng/PostCode.aspx | accessdate = 2009-10-20 | archiveurl= https://web.archive.org/web/20091007011423/http://www.nipost.gov.ng/PostCode.aspx| archivedate= 7 October 2009 | deadurl= yes}} {{LGAs of Borno State}}{{coord|11|31|08|N|13|41|03|E|type:city_source:kolossus-plwiki|display=title}}{{BornoNG-geo-stub}}2. ^{{Cite web| title = Africa - Suspected Islamist rebels raid northeast Nigerian town| work = France 24| accessdate = 2014-06-28| date = 2014-02-19| url = http://www.france24.com/en/20140219-boko-haram-islamists-bama-nigeria-raid/}} 3. ^{{Cite book| edition = Millennium| publisher = Federal Ministry of Information| isbn = 9780104089| volume = 2, State Surveys| last = Nigeria| title = Nigeria: a people united, a future assured| location = Abuja, Nigeria| date = 2000| page = 106}} 4. ^{{Cite web| last = Ross| first = Will| title = Nigeria: 'Many dead in Boko Haram raid' in Borno state| work = BBC News| accessdate = 2014-06-28| date = 2013-05-07| url = https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-22444417}} 5. ^{{Cite web| last = Ross| first = Will| title = Nigeria's Boko Haram crisis: Bama attack mars victory claims| work = BBC News| accessdate = 2014-06-28| date = 2014-02-19| url = https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-26254480}} 6. ^{{Cite news| last = Ola' Audu| title = Boko Haram sacks residents of Bama, Gwoza in Borno| work = Premium Times| accessdate = 2014-06-28| url = http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/139401-boko-haram-sacks-residents-of-bama-gwoza-in-borno.html}} 7. ^[https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-29021037 Nigeria's Boko Haram 'seize' Bama town in Borno] 8. ^{{Cite news| title = Nigeria: Boko Haram Kills More Than 50 Elderly People| work = This Day -- allAfrica.com| accessdate = 2015-01-08| url = http://allafrica.com/stories/201412222101.html}} 9. ^{{Cite web| last = Kareem Haruna| title = Nigeria: New Video Shows Boko Haram Shooting Civilians at School Dormitory| work = Leadership (Abuja) - allAfrica.com| accessdate = 2015-01-08| date = 2014-12-22| url = http://allafrica.com/stories/201412220231.html}} 10. ^{{cite news | title=Nigeria military says Bama city recaptured from Boko Haram | author=Julia Payne | date=2015-03-16 | publisher=Reuters | url=https://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/16/us-nigeria-violence-idUSKBN0MC24I20150316}} 11. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://www.msf.org/en/article/20160622-nigeria-least-24000-displaced-people-dire-health-situation-bama|title=Nigeria: At least 24,000 displaced people in dire health situation in Bama|access-date=2016-06-24}} 12. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-36603419|title=Nigeria Boko Haram: Scores of refugees starved to death - MSF|website=BBC News|access-date=2016-06-24}} 13. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/23/refugees-die-starvation-illness-nigeria-camp-bama-boko-haram|title=More than 1,200 die of starvation and illness at Nigeria refugee camp|last=Lagos|first=Reuters in|date=2016-06-23|website=the Guardian|access-date=2016-06-24}} 2 : Local Government Areas in Borno State|Populated places in Borno State |
