For the first five seasons, the show was filmed in Miami, Florida, and beginning with season four, partially in New York City. Basketball Wives spawned a Los Angeles-based spinoff, Basketball Wives LA, which premiered in 2011. VH1 announced the original series would return after a five-year hiatus with its sixth season premiered on April 17, 2017. Beginning with season six, the setting of the show relocated permanently to Los Angeles, effectively combining the casts of the original series and Basketball Wives LA. On April 16, 2018, VH1 announced the show's return for a seventh season, which premiered on May 14, 2018. DevelopmentBasketball Wives debuted on April 11, 2010, with thirty-minute episodes. The second season premiered on December 12, 2010, with expanded sixty-minute episodes and featured new cast member Tami Roman.[2] Season 3 made its debut on May 30, 2011, with new cast member Meeka Claxton.[3] The fourth season premiered on February 20, 2012, with two new cast members, Kenya Bell and Kesha Nichols and the departure of Claxton.[4] The fifth season premiered on August 19, 2013, with Tasha Marbury joining the cast.[5] According to a tweet from Tami Roman after the fifth season, the show has been quietly though officially canceled at that time.[6]On March 27, 2017, VH1 announced on April 17 that the series would be returning after nearly four years off-air, with Evelyn Lozada, Shaunie O'Neal, Tami Roman, Jackie Christie and Malaysia Pargo returning to the franchise. Keonna Green, Bonnie-Jill Laflin, Cristen Metoyer and Aja Metoyer joined the cast as recurring cast members.[7] Brandi Maxiell, Elena Ahanzadeh and Saniy'yah Samaa also joined the series as recurring cast members. Hazel Renee joined the series as a recurring cast member halfway through filming the sixth season, as well as Jennifer Williams, who was a cast member on the show from seasons 1–4.
