On 25 August 2008, Iranian defence minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar announced Iran had started building the first submarine of the class: Qaaem. The submarine will be capable of carrying and firing various types of torpedoes and undersea missiles.[3][4] According to the Iranian Navy these submarines will weigh 1,200 tons.[5][6] Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said that they would be equipped with torpedoes and naval mines. He also said: "the smart long-range Qaa'em submarine is also capable of carrying out both defensive and offensive operations".[7] According to Global Security, a total of two of these Submarines will be built and completed by 2015.[8]See alsoReferences1. ^http://www.mashreghnews.ir/fa/news/294295/%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA-%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%AD%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%B3%D9%BE%D8%A7%D9%87-%D8%AC%D9%86%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%84-%D8%B1%D8%B2%D9%85%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%B4%E2%80%8C%D9%87%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D9%85%D9%88%D8%B4%DA%A9%DB%8C 2. ^ Navy designing new medium heavy class submarines {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140321095357/http://www.tehrantimes.com/politics/2777-navy-designing-new-medium-heavy-class-submarines |date=March 21, 2014 }} 21 September 2011 3. ^Press TV Iran begins new submarine production {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080828230710/http://www.presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=67525§ionid=351020101 |date=2008-08-28 }} 25 August 2008 4. ^reuters [https://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSLP59889920080825?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0 Iran launches submarine production line] 25 August 2008 5. ^ Iran to release Fateh, Besat submarines of own production January 18, 2012 6. ^Fars News Agency آغاز طراحي و ساخت زيردريايي هاي سنگين در ايران September 6, 2008 7. ^Press TV Semi-heavy submarines to protect Iran waters {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080907111008/http://www.presstv.com/Detail.aspx?id=68645§ionid=351020101 |date=September 7, 2008 }} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/besat.htm|title=Besat / Qaaem, Qaem, or Ghaaem Submarine|first=John|last=Pike|website=www.globalsecurity.org}}
