It originates near Haringhata in Nadia district and then flows through Deganga, Habra and Barasat areas of North 24 Parganas before joining the Raimangal River in the Sundarbans.[1] The river has formed a major navigation route for earlier civilisations. The river port of Chandraketugarh in the third century BC was on the banks of this river. This river has been the major drainage system of North 24 Parganas and Kolkata.[1] The Sundarbans area has a network of interconnecting waterways. The larger channels are often a mile wide running in a north-south direction. The Bidyadhari and other such channels now carry little freshwater as they are mostly cut off from the Ganges, the main source of fresh water. As a result of the subsidence of the Bengal Basin and a gradual eastward tilting of the overlying crust the Hooghly-Bhagirathi channels have progressively shifted eastwards since the seventeenth century.[2] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.thestatesman.net/page.arcview.php?clid=23&id=35751&usrsess=1 |title=Health of Vidyadhari a cause for concern |accessdate=2009-10-27 |last=Chatterjee |first=Rajib |work= |publisher=The Statesman, 31 October 2006 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070929102706/http://www.thestatesman.net/page.arcview.php?clid=23&id=35751&usrsess=1 |archivedate=September 29, 2007 }} {{Rivers in and around Bengal}}{{Coord|22.1477790|N|88.7387310|E|source:yahoomap_region:IN|format=dms|display=title}}{{WestBengal-geo-stub}}{{India-river-stub}}2. ^{{cite web| url = http://cwc.gov.in/CPDAC/Paper_Research_Work/Paper%20Research%20Work%20.pdf| title = Mangrove Forest in India| accessdate = 2009-10-27| last = | first = | work = | publisher = | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20110721161718/http://cwc.gov.in/CPDAC/Paper_Research_Work/Paper%20Research%20Work%20.pdf| archive-date = 2011-07-21| dead-url = yes| df = }} 3 : Rivers of West Bengal|North 24 Parganas district|Sundarbans |
