Football careerGray was born in Inverness and began his youth career with local club Inverness Thistle.[2] He started his professional career with Partick Thistle.[3] After five years, he moved to southern England to join Southampton of the Southern League to replace Kelly Houlker who had returned to Blackburn Rovers. Gray made his "Saints" debut in the opening match of the 1906–07 season and his form meant that he rarely missed a match until an injury sustained in a 5–1 defeat at Reading in March brought his season to a premature end, with James Bowden eventually replacing him.[4] Apparently unhappy in the south of England, Gray returned to Scotland in the summer of 1907 to resume his career with Partick Thistle.[3] Personal lifeGray served as a corporal in the Seaforth Highlanders during the First World War and died in France on 18 November 1916.[5] He is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension.[5][6] References1. ^{{cite book| last1=Chalk| first1=Gary| last2=Holley| first2=Duncan| last3=Bull |first3=David|title=All the Saints: A Complete Players' Who's Who of Southampton FC| year=2013|location=Southampton|publisher=Hagiology Publishing| isbn=978-0-9926-8640-6|p=77}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Gray, Bill}}2. ^{{Cite web |url=http://www.scotlandswar.co.uk/pdf_Season_1916-1917_(Fell).pdf |title=They Died in the Conflict in Season 1916–1917 |website=Edinburgh's War |accessdate=8 January 2016 |df=dmy-all}} 3. ^1 {{cite book | title=The Alphabet of the Saints|last= Holley |first= Duncan |author2=Chalk, Gary| publisher= ACL & Polar Publishing | year=1992| isbn=0-9514862-3-3|page=147}} 4. ^{{cite book | title=Saints – A complete record|last= Chalk|first= Gary|author2=Holley, Duncan | publisher= Breedon Books| year=1987| isbn= 0-907969-22-4|pages=40–41}} 5. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{Cite web|title = William John Gray {{!}} Service Record {{!}} Football and the First World War|url = http://www.footballandthefirstworldwar.org/william-gray-service-record/|website = Football and the First World War|accessdate = 8 January 2016}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=GRAY, WILLIAM JOHN|url=http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/78653/GRAY,%20WILLIAM%20JOHN|publisher=CWGC|accessdate=8 January 2016}} 13 : 1882 births|Scottish footballers|Association football wing halves|Scottish Football League players|Southern Football League players|Partick Thistle F.C. players|Southampton F.C. players|Inverness Thistle F.C. players|1916 deaths|British military personnel killed in World War I|British military personnel of World War I|Seaforth Highlanders soldiers|Sportspeople from Inverness |
