Nicholls, who was just 15 when he began playing at North Shore in Geelong, was recruited from the Falcons late in the 1999 AFL Draft.[2] He had a memorable debut in 2001 for Hawthorn with 17 disposals and three goals against Geelong at Docklands Stadium and finished the year with an elimination final appearance. With a hamstring injury keeping him out of action in 2002, Nicholls nominated for the 2002 AFL Draft and was picked up by Richmond with the 47th selection. Injuries continued to restrict him and he could only manage 10 games in his two seasons.[3] Nicholls retired from football at the end of the 2004 season.[4] On 18 June 2012, a twenty-six-year-old man was shot outside Nicholls's home in Corio. Nicholls was arrested and questioned by the police over the shooting but later released.[4] In April 2013 he was arrested by the Victoria Police Special Operations Group[5] and subsequently charged over both the June 2012 incident and another shooting in January 2013.[6] In February 2015 he was found guilty of shooting two men.[7] On 23 March 2015 he was sentenced to 11 years (8 years minimum before parole) in gaol.[8] References1. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.standard.net.au/story/1462811/ex-roosters-footballer-in-dramatic-arrest/?cs=383 | title=Ex-Roosters footballer in dramatic arrest | work=The Standard | date=29 April 2013 | accessdate=29 April 2013 | author=Thomson, Andrew | location=Warrnambool | publisher=Fairfax Regional Media}} {{2002 AFL national draft}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Nicholls, Bill}}2. ^{{cite book|last=Holmesby|first=Russell|last2=Main|first2=Jim|title=The Encyclopedia Of AFL Footballers| publisher=BAS Publishing|year=2007|isbn=978-1-920910-78-5}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/B/Bill_Nicholls.html| title=Bill Nicholls| publisher=AFL Tables}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|last=Levy|first=Megan|title=Man shot outside home of ex-AFL player|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/man-shot-outside-home-of-exafl-player-20120619-20kst.html|work=The Age|publisher=Fairfax Media|accessdate=19 June 2012}} 5. ^http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/law-order/ex-afl-footballer-billy-nicholls-charged-over-shootings/story-fnat79vb-1226630279306 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/2013/04/26/19/53/man-charged-over-vic-shootings|archive-url=https://archive.is/20130627220741/http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/2013/04/26/19/53/man-charged-over-vic-shootings|dead-url=yes|archive-date=27 June 2013|title=Man charged over Vic shootings|date=26 April 2013}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.9news.com.au/national/2015/02/18/19/04/disgraced-footballer-behind-bars-after-being-found-guilty-of-shooting-two-men|date=18 February 2015|title=Disgraced footballer behind bars after being found guilty of shooting two men}} 8. ^{{cite web|last1=Nicholls|first1=Bill|title=FOrmer AFL Player|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/former-afl-player-billy-nicholls-jailed-for-11-years-for-shooting-two-men-20150323-1m5ky8.html|website=www.theage.com.au|publisher=The Age|accessdate=23 March 2015}} 7 : 1981 births|Hawthorn Football Club players|Richmond Football Club players|Living people|Australian rules footballers from Victoria (Australia)|Geelong Falcons players|North Shore Football Club (GFL) players |
