The drainage area for Birch Lake is {{convert|66|mi2|km2}}. Its area covers {{convert|1137|acre|km2}} (conservation level).[2] The total capacity is: {{convert|52800|acre.ft|m3}}, subdivided into: Conservation {{convert|15800|acre.ft|m3}}, Flood control {{convert|39000|acre.ft|m3}}, and Inactive storage {{convert|15840|acre.ft|m3}}.[3] The lake is formed from Birch Creek, a tributary of Bird Creek.[2] It eventually empties into the Arkansas River.
