The firm has approximately 1,550 staff including 170 partners (as of 1 May 2014) and 630 lawyers and technical experts.[4] HistoryIn 1997, the firm was created with the merger of Berrymans with Lace Mawer.[5] The origins of the firm date back to the 18th century, when Joshua Lace gave his name to an already established law firm in Liverpool. In 1901, Frederic Berryman began the practice of Berrymans in the City of London and, in 1946, Arthur Mawer founded AW Mawer & Co in Manchester. On May 1, 2014, Berrymans Lace Mawer and HBM Sayers formally combined as BLM.[6] Matthew Harrington is the current national senior partner (elected February 2018) succeeding Mike Brown’s six year term. Under Mike Brown’s leadership, BLM restructured and reengineered its business model, becoming a leading and award winning law firm with a new commercial arm. On his appointment to the role, Matthew Harrington said: “My vision is to continue our ambition of being a market leading firm operating in risk and insurance in the UK and Ireland with an international reach, together with a strong non-insurance capability to offer to a wider client base. We have so much opportunity and I’m keen to work with colleagues to take advantage of our growing capabilities.”[7]In October 2017, BLM launched a new commercial advisory practice bringing in a new team of 33 lawyers, including 11 partners from the law firm, Slater & Gordon.[8] On 12 February 2018, BLM announced a two year Research & Development partnership with the London School of Economics, in which a team of three professors will work with BLM. The team will develop prediction models to guide BLM’s advice to its clients, as well as more sophisticated approaches to value litigation risk, improve decision-making and better manage portfolios of litigation risk. Corporate social responsibilityBLM’s corporate social responsibility committee manages all of the company’s CSR activities. The committee produces an annual report called Community Matters,[9] which provides further information about the firm’s CSR initiatives and programmes they are involved with. In January 2007, BLM partnered with The Prince's Trust for four years, assisting in its support of 14 to 30 year olds to offer practical support including training, mentoring and financial assistance.[10] In 2011, BLM selected children's charity Barnardo's to be the firm's national charity for the next two years.[11] In 2017, the staff nominated Mind and SANE as its corporate charity partners.[12] OfficesBLM has 13 offices across the UK and Ireland with the head office being based in Manchester.
