It is a piano trio recording, with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. Mehldau received a Grammy nomination at the end of 2016 for Best Improvised Jazz Solo on the album's "I Concentrate on You".[1][2] BackgroundThe previous release by the trio of Brad Mehldau (piano), Larry Grenadier (bass), and Jeff Ballard (drums) was Where Do You Start, in 2012.[3] Music and recordingAll seven of the tracks are covers.[3] The album was recorded at Avatar Studios, New York City, on December 10, 2012, and May 12, 2014.[4] ReceptionThe Financial Times reviewer commented that "Each track is a beautifully crafted, richly detailed miniature with its own tale to tell."[6] Peter Hum of Ottawa Citizen wrote: "for those who think Mehldau’s music can be too formidable for their tastes, Blues and Ballads should be a more straightforward but still deeply satisfying delight, as it will be for his legions of devotees".[5] {{Album ratings| MC = 84/100[6] | rev1 = AllMusic | rev1score= {{rating|4|5}}[7] | rev2 = The Australian | rev2Score = {{rating|4|5}}[8] | rev3 = The Buffalo News | rev3Score = {{rating|2|4}}[9] | rev4 = Down Beat | rev4Score = {{rating|3.5|5}}[10] | rev5 = Financial Times | rev5Score = {{rating|5|5}}[11] | rev6 = The Guardian | rev6Score = {{rating|4|5}}[12] | rev7 = PopMatters | rev7Score = 8/10[13] | rev8 = The Times | rev8Score = {{rating|5|5}}[14] }} Track listing
