Folklore has it that the Bonython donation was made on the condition that a hall be built opposite Pulteney Street, thus blocking any future path through the parklands and preventing the division of the campus by a major thoroughfare.[7] Folklore also maintains that the Bonython family were very conservative and did not want the building used as a dance hall. Hence, the hall was designed and built with a sloping floor rather than flat floor.[6][4] Renovation worksBeginning in 2005, the University has been conducting renovation works. The quality of these works has been rewarded with an Award of Merit at the 2007 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.[1][7][8] GalleryReferences1. ^1 {{cite web |url = http://nationalwinecentre.com.au/adelaidean/issues/22001/news22013.html |title=UN heritage award goes to Adelaide icon |publisher=University of Adelaide |accessdate=2009-03-12}} {{Adelaide landmarks}}{{coord|-34.920548|138.605396|display=title|region:AU-SA_type:landmark}}2. ^{{Cite AHPI |RNE6368 |Bonython Hall |accessdate=2009-03-12}} 3. ^{{Cite AHPI |SA10878 |Bonython Hall, The University of Adelaide |accessdate=2009-03-12}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.postcards.sa.com.au/features2008/uni_heritage_walk.html |title=University Heritage Walk: Keith takes a walk in the Adelaide City region of South Australia |work=Postcards SA |publisher=NWS Nine |accessdate=2009-03-13 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110312181307/http://www.postcards.sa.com.au/features2008/uni_heritage_walk.html# |archive-date=12 March 2011 |dead-url=yes |df=dmy-all }} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A070345b.htm|title=Sir John Langdon Bonython|work=Australian Dictionary of Biography|publisher=Australian National University|accessdate=2009-03-12}} 6. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.adelaide.edu.au/adelaidean/issues/6781/news6845.html |title=Helping a University treasure keep its cool |last=Salkow |first=Howard |date=September 2005 |work=Adelaidean |publisher=University of Adelaide |accessdate=2009-03-12}} 7. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.adelaide.edu.au/news/news8801.html |title=Heritage hall is green and cool |date=15 December 2005 |publisher=University of Adelaide|accessdate=2009-03-12}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.unesco.or.id/activities/386.php |title=Winners Announced for the 2007 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation |date=11 September 2007 |publisher=UNESCO |accessdate=2009-03-12}} {{Dead link|date=October 2010|bot=H3llBot}} 5 : Buildings and structures in Adelaide|University of Adelaide|UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards winners|South Australian Heritage Register|Adelaide Park Lands |
