{{Infobox_gene}}Brevican core protein is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BCAN gene.[1][2][3] Brevican is a member of the lectican protein family. Brevican is localised to the surface of neurons in the brain.[4] In melanocytic cells, BCAN gene expression may be regulated by MITF.[5] References 1. ^{{cite journal | vauthors = Gary SC, Zerillo CA, Chiang VL, Gaw JU, Gray G, Hockfield S | title = cDNA cloning, chromosomal localization, and expression analysis of human BEHAB/brevican, a brain specific proteoglycan regulated during cortical development and in glioma | journal = Gene | volume = 256 | issue = 1–2 | pages = 139–47 | date = Oct 2000 | pmid = 11054543 | pmc = | doi = 10.1016/S0378-1119(00)00362-0 }} 2. ^{{cite journal | vauthors = Nomoto H, Oohashi T, Hirakawa S, Ueki Y, Ohtsuki H, Ninomiya Y | title = Human BRAL1 and BCAN genes that belong to the link-module superfamily are tandemly arranged on chromosome 1q21-23 | journal = Acta Medica Okayama | volume = 56 | issue = 1 | pages = 25–9 | date = Feb 2002 | pmid = 11873941 | pmc = | doi = }} 3. ^{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: BCAN brevican| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=63827| accessdate = }} 4. ^{{cite journal | vauthors = Frischknecht R, Seidenbecher CI | title = Brevican: a key proteoglycan in the perisynaptic extracellular matrix of the brain | journal = The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology | volume = 44 | issue = 7 | pages = 1051–4 | date = Jul 2012 | pmid = 22537913 | doi = 10.1016/j.biocel.2012.03.022 }} 5. ^{{cite journal | vauthors = Hoek KS, Schlegel NC, Eichhoff OM, Widmer DS, Praetorius C, Einarsson SO, Valgeirsdottir S, Bergsteinsdottir K, Schepsky A, Dummer R, Steingrimsson E | title = Novel MITF targets identified using a two-step DNA microarray strategy | journal = Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research | volume = 21 | issue = 6 | pages = 665–76 | date = Dec 2008 | pmid = 19067971 | doi = 10.1111/j.1755-148X.2008.00505.x }}
