The British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA) is a monthly peer-reviewed international medical journal published by Elsevier (previously published by Oxford University Press until 2018) on behalf of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (and its [https://www.rcoa.ac.uk/faculty-of-pain-medicine Faculty of Pain Medicine]); the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland; and the [https://www.hkca.edu.hk/ Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists], for all of which it serves as their official journal. The journal covers all aspects of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, intensive care medicine and pain management. The current editor-in-chief is Hugh C. Hemmings[1] ([https://weill.cornell.edu/ Weill Cornell Medical College]).

The BJA was founded in 1923, one year after the first anaesthetic journal (Anesthesia & Analgesia) was published by the International Anaesthesia Research Society. The first Editor-in-Chief of the journal was H. M. Cohen. He was based in Manchester, UK, but born in New York City, and he edited the journal from 1923 to 1928. Recent Editors-in-Chief include Ravi Mahajan ([https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ University of Nottingham]), Charles Reilly ([https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ University of Sheffield]) and Jennifer Hunter ([https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/ University of Liverpool]).

BJA Education

The BJA has a sister journal entitled BJA Education which was first established in 2001 as BJA CEPD Reviews; it was later renamed to Continuing Education in Anaesthesia, Critical Care & Pain (CEACCP) in 2004 and latterly to BJA Education in 2015. This publication is a commission-only reviews journal that is published monthly. BJA Education aims to strengthen the educational platform provided by the flagship journal, BJA. The mission statement of BJA Education is "Improving patient care by supporting continuing professional development in anaesthesia, critical care, pain and perioperative medicine." The current Editor-in-Chief is Jonathan P. Thompson (University Hospitals of Leicester). The most recent Editor-in-Chief prior to this was Jeremy Langton ([https://www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/ University Hospitals Plymouth]).
