The British Philatelic Trust was established in 1981 by the British Post Office.[1] The governing deed was executed on 26 September 1983.[2] The Trust is independent and was registered as an educational charity on 21 November 1983.[2][3] OriginsThe trust was created with the surplus funds raised by Royal Mail for the London 1980 International Stamp Exhibition. Three miniature sheets were issued which were intended to raise funds for the exhibition but in fact they raised far more than was expected and the excess formed the trust's original endowment. This was supplemented with funds raised for Stamp World London 1990 and additional donations by Royal Mail and others since. ObjectivesThe trust's objective is the study, research and dissemination of knowledge of philately.[1] GovernanceThe trust has a board of trustees including a chairman and representatives from Royal Mail. The board meets four times per annum. The current chairman is Francis Kiddle.[4] FinancialThe trust had net assets of £3,555,186 as at 5 April 2008 and is exempt from UK tax.[2] References1. ^1 {{Cite web |url=http://www.abps.org.uk/Home/British_Philatelic_Trust/index.xalter |title=British Philatelic Trust |publisher=Association of British Philatelic Societies |accessdate=2 October 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100905115237/http://www.abps.org.uk/Home/British_Philatelic_Trust/index.xalter# |archive-date=5 September 2010 |dead-url=yes |df=dmy-all }} 2. ^1 2 Accounts Year ended 5 April 2008{{dead link|date=July 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}.
