He played rugby union (RU) at representative level for Wales, and at club level for Taibach RFC, Aberavon RFC and Glamorgan Police RFC, as a lock, i.e. number 4 or 5,[1][2] and representative level rugby league (RL) for Wales, and at club level for Huddersfield, as a {{rlp|lf}}, i.e. number 13, during the era of contested scrums.[3][4] BackgroundPhillips was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, and he died aged c.79–80 in Neath, Wales.
