Residents pronounce the town's name with a long E: "Heh-LEE'-nuh." The population was 1,403 at the 2010 census.[3] It is the site of the James Crabtree Correctional Center, run by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, with a population of 1,003 inmates in 2010.[4] It is the site of the Timberlake Public School district, shared with the nearby towns of Goltry, Jet, and Nash. HistoryOn June 1894, Helen S. Monroe received a postal designation for Helena.[5][6] Monroe became the first postmaster and the town's namesake.[6] Shortly after the Cherokee Outlet opened to settlement, numerous small communities emerged in what was then southwestern Woods County (now Alfalfa county). When the Arkansas Valley and Western Railway survey bypassed the nearby settlement of Carwile, those residents began migrating closer to the proposed railroad, near where H. H. Anderson had established a store around 1896. The townsite was laid out nearby in 1902, and the village was incorporated the following year, by which time the population was 160.[5] The Woods County High School, one of only two in Oklahoma Territory at that time, was constructed in 1903 and opened in 1904 with four hundred students. On January 6, 1904, the Arkansas Valley and Western Railway (part of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway system) reached Helena. Growing fast, by mid-1905 it was estimated that seven hundred residents supported two banks, two schools, two newspapers, four grain elevators, a flour mill, and two lumberyards. By 1909, there were Baptist, Christian, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches. The 1910 census showed 760 residents, a number which had increased to 776 by 1940.[5] Helena MammothIn July 2013, the remains of a mammoth were found two miles northwest of Helena by workers of Access Midstream, a natural gas provider, on land owned by brothers Dr. Michael Thorp and Tom Thorp. Oklahoma State University geographer Carlos Cordova, and geography doctoral student Tom Cox excavated the site from September 2013 until October 2013.[7] Oklahoma State University has plans to display the mammoth, which was donated by the Thorp's.[8] GeographyHelena is located at {{coord|36|32|47|N|98|16|14|W|type:city}} (36.546478, -98.270558).[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of {{convert|0.4|sqmi|km2}}, all of it land. Helena lies along State Highway 58.[10] {{-}}Climate{{Weather box |location = Helena, Oklahoma |single line = Y |Jan record high F = |Feb record high F = |Mar record high F = |Apr record high F = |May record high F = |Jun record high F = |Jul record high F = |Aug record high F = |Sep record high F = |Oct record high F = |Nov record high F = |Dec record high F = |year record high F= |Jan high F = 43.6 |Feb high F = 48.8 |Mar high F = 58.9 |Apr high F = 70.0 |May high F = 79.0 |Jun high F = 88.8 |Jul high F = 94.9 |Aug high F = 93.2 |Sep high F = 83.8 |Oct high F = 73.1 |Nov high F = 57.9 |Dec high F = 46.4 |year high F= |Jan low F = 20.0 |Feb low F = 24.5 |Mar low F = 33.6 |Apr low F = 44.1 |May low F = 54.0 |Jun low F = 63.9 |Jul low F = 68.9 |Aug low F = 67.3 |Sep low F = 59.1 |Oct low F = 46.6 |Nov low F = 34.1 |Dec low F = 23.8 |year low F= |Jan record low F = |Feb record low F = |Mar record low F = |Apr record low F = |May record low F = |Jun record low F = |Jul record low F = |Aug record low F = |Sep record low F = |Oct record low F = |Nov record low F = |Dec record low F = |year record low F= |Jan precipitation inch = 0.8 |Feb precipitation inch = 1.2 |Mar precipitation inch = 2.4 |Apr precipitation inch = 2.5 |May precipitation inch = 4.0 |Jun precipitation inch = 3.8 |Jul precipitation inch = 2.6 |Aug precipitation inch = 2.8 |Sep precipitation inch = 3.2 |Oct precipitation inch = 2.1 |Nov precipitation inch = 1.8 |Dec precipitation inch = 1.0 |year precipitation inch=28.1 |Jan snow inch = |Feb snow inch = |Mar snow inch = |Apr snow inch = |May snow inch = |Jun snow inch = |Jul snow inch = |Aug snow inch = |Sep snow inch = |Oct snow inch = |Nov snow inch = |Dec snow inch = |year snow inch= |Jan humidity= |Feb humidity= |Mar humidity= |Apr humidity= |May humidity= |Jun humidity= |Jul humidity= |Aug humidity= |Sep humidity= |Oct humidity= |Nov humidity= |Dec humidity= |year humidity= |unit rain days= |Jan rain days= |Feb rain days= |Mar rain days= |Apr rain days= |May rain days= |Jun rain days= |Jul rain days= |Aug rain days= |Sep rain days= |Oct rain days= |Nov rain days= |Dec rain days= |year rain days= |source 1 = weather.com |source 2 = Weatherbase.com [11] |date=October 2, 2010 }} Demographics{{US Census population|1910= 760 |1920= 615 |1930= 735 |1940= 776 |1950= 484 |1960= 580 |1970= 769 |1980= 710 |1990= 1043 |2000= 443 |2010= 1403 |estyear=2015 |estimate=1426 |estref=[12] |footnote=U.S. Decennial Census[13] }} As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 443 people, 177 households, and 120 families residing in the town.
