It was created at a grape breeding institute in Weinsberg in the Württemberg wine region of Germany in 1971 by crossing Dornfelder and Cabernet Sauvignon.[1][2] Cabernet Dorsa received varietal protection and was released for general cultivation in 2003.[1] The vines of Cabernet Dorsa show good winter hardiness and the grapes reach higher must weights than Dornfelder or Spätburgunder under typical German growing conditions. In 2006, there were {{convert|214|ha|acre}} of Cabernet Dorsa in Germany, with an increasing trend.[3] In 2000, before the variety's general release, there existed only {{convert|2.87|ha|acre}} of experimental plantations. Cabernet Dorsa wines are deep in colour, rich in tannin, have noticeable aromas of cherry and bell peppers and are considered well suited for oak barrel aging.[1] It is known under the synonyms (breeding codes) We 71-817-92 with We denoting Weinsberg.[2] References1. ^1 2 Wein-Plus Glossar: Cabernet Dorsa, accessed on March 6, 2013 2. ^1 Vitis International Variety Catalogue: Cabernet Dorsa {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120405173100/http://www.vivc.de/datasheet/dataResult.php?data=20002# |date=2012-04-05 }}, accessed on May 1, 2008 3. ^German Wine Institute: German Wine Statistics 2007-2008 {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080920194632/http://www.deutscheweine.de/icc/Internet-DE/med/1a6/1a64f607-a3e5-5117-3d28-952196117f51%2C11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111.pdf |date=2008-09-20 }} 1 : Red wine grape varieties |
