It is located on the Bear River {{convert|3|mi|km|0}} northeast of Cape Mendocino,[1] at an elevation of {{convert|49|ft|m}}.[2] The Gas Jet post office operated from 1868 to 1876.[1] The name referred to escaping gas from an oil well.[1] The False Cape post office opened in 1870, changed the name to Capetown in 1879, and closed for good in 1937.[1] Capetown is the westernmost settlement in the state of California.{{cn|date=May 2015}} ClimateThis region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above {{convert|71.6|F|C}}.
