The falls are situated between the pinheiral (pine forest) zone of the Brazilian Highlands and the southern coastal Atlantic Forest.[2] The base of the waterfall can be reached by a steep 927-step trail maintained by the Projeto Lobo-Guará.[1] Waterfall has formed on the basalt rocks of Serra Geral formation and has two cascades. Upper cascade is located approximately 100 m before the second cascade, which falls over an overhanging cliff ledge.[3] Caracol Falls has long attracted visitors and is the second most popular natural tourist attraction in Brazil, trailing only Iguazu Falls. In 2009, it received more than 289,000 visitors.[4] There is a nearby 100-foot observation tower that offers an elevator and a panoramic view, as well as a cable car that gives tourists an aerial view of the waterfall.[1][5][6] The area also provides a restaurant and craft stalls.[6] References1. ^1 2 {{Cite book |title= Adventure Guide Brazil|last= Waggoner|first= John|year= 2008|publisher= Hunter Publishing|location= New Jersey|isbn= 978-1-58843-639-9|page= 549}} 2. ^Tropical Fish Hobbyist, Vol. 44, p. 188. 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.wondermondo.com/Countries/SA/BRA/RioGrandeDoSul/CaracolFalls.htm|title=Caracol Falls|publisher=Wondermondo}} 4. ^{{Cite news |title=Canela flerta com o ecoturismo |author=Paulo Campos |newspaper=Pampulha |date=30 April 2010 |url=http://www.otempo.com.br/jornalpampulha/noticias/?IdNoticia=5817 }}{{dead link|date=November 2016 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} 5. ^{{Cite book |title= Fodor's Brazil|last= Kelly|first= Margaret|year= 2008|publisher= Fodors Travel Publications|location= New York|isbn= 978-1-4000-1966-3|page= 281}} 6. ^1 {{Cite book |title= Let's Go Brazil|last= Rego|first= Luis|year= 2004|publisher= St. Martin's|location= New York|isbn= 978-0-312-32004-1|page= 268}}
