SynopsisThe book follows Max and Olivia, two teenagers that are attending a summer arts program at Yale. Max is a drama student while Olivia is in the process of writing a feminist musical about the sex lives of teenagers and their often unrealistic portrayal in high-school movies. The two characters clash, as Olivia has chosen to stay away from men while Max has a goal of trying to pick up every woman he meets. Critical responseReception for Castration Celebration was mixed to negative,[2][3][4] with Kirkus Reviews commenting that the characters often came across as "caricatures rather than three-dimensional characters".[5] Publishers Weekly also gave a mixed review, saying that although American Pie fans would enjoy the novel, "the relentless and explicit banter can be exhausting".[6] Common Sense Media panned the book overall, giving it 2 out of 5 stars and an overall summary of "Crass, explicit novel tries to be provocative, ends up lame".[7] The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books also panned the book, saying that "while some readers will undoubtedly find the banter amusing in a shock-jock sort of way, the book reinforces tired battle-of-the-sexes and horny teen stereotypes, showing little respect for the complex intellectual or emotional capacities of its audience".[8] References1. ^{{cite news|last=Peyser|first=Andrea|title=DIRTY TEEN TALE IS A CUT BELOW|url=https://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/nypost/access/1688903851.html?FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&type=current&date=Apr+27%2C+2009&author=Andrea+Peyser&pub=New+York+Post&desc=DIRTY+TEEN+TALE+IS+A+CUT+BELOW&pqatl=google|accessdate=27 March 2013|newspaper=New York Post|date=Apr 27, 2009}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Review: Castration Celebration|url=http://www.booklistonline.com/Castration-Celebration-Jake-Wizner/pid=3263783|publisher=Booklist|accessdate=27 March 2013}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Review: Castration Celebration|url=http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6724623.html|publisher=School Library Journal (Review index)|accessdate=27 March 2013}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Review: Castration Celebration|url=http://bookverdict.com/details.xqy?uri=Product-8657081.xml|publisher=Horn Book Guide|accessdate=27 March 2013}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Castration Celebration|url=https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/jake-wizner/castration-celebration/|work=Kirkus Reviews|accessdate=19 March 2013|date=May 20, 2010}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Children's Review: Castration Celebration|url=http://reg.publishersweekly.com/978-0-375-85215-2|work=Publishers Weekly|accessdate=19 March 2013|date=2009-05-18}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Castration Celebration (Review)|url=http://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/castration-celebration|work=Common Sense Media|accessdate=19 March 2013}} 8. ^{{cite journal|last=Coats|first=Karen|title=Castration Celebration (review)|journal=Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books|year=2009|volume=62|issue=11|page=465|doi=10.1353/bcc.0.1053}} External links
