The area was visited by early 19th century sealers operating from nearby Clothier Harbour. Following a survey by the 1949 Chilean Antarctic Expedition, the feature was resurveyed and descriptively named from HMS Protector in 1967. LocationThe reef is located at {{coord|62|21|50.6|S|59|46|11|W|}} which is {{convert|970|m|yd|0|abbr=on}} north-northwest from the midpoint of Okol Rocks, {{convert|1.13|km|mi|abbr=on}} north-northeast of Kilifarevo Island, {{convert|1.48|km|mi|abbr=on}} east-northeast of Morris Rock, {{convert|1.26|km|mi|abbr=on}} southeast of Turmoil Rock, {{convert|3.96|km|mi|abbr=on}} southwest of Cornwall Island and {{convert|2.45|km|mi|abbr=on}} west-northwest of Fort William, Robert Island (Chilean mapping in 1949-50 and 1971, British in 1968, 1972 and 1990, and Bulgarian in 2009).
