It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Chmielno.[2] It lies approximately {{convert|7|km|mi|0}} west of Kartuzy and {{convert|35|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} west of the regional capital Gdańsk. Kashubian ceramics from Chmielno is characterised by the motifs of the Kashubian star, fish-scales, tulips, lilies, wreaths, lilac branches, all complemented by wavy lines and dots.
