It was founded in 2008 and most of its members came from the For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK and New Era Party. A liberal conservative party, it was part of the European People's Party at the European level. It has also been described as centre-right[2] or right-wing.[3][4] The party was part of the coalition government led by Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Dombrovskis.[4] The Civic Union controlled the Latvia Ministry of Defence under the then-Minister Imants Viesturs Lieģis. A party leader was Sandra Kalniete, a former European Commissioner. In the 2009 European Parliament election the Civic Union won over 24% of the vote in Latvia and gained two Members of the European Parliament.[5] On 6 August 2011, it merged with two other parties to form the new political party Unity.[6] References1. ^EPP/Member parties {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110720094800/http://www.epp.eu/countryPgparty.asp?cid=16&pid=3 |date=2011-07-20 }} 2. ^{{cite book|author=Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.|title=Britannica Book of the Year 2010|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=QeKbAAAAQBAJ&pg=PA429|date=1 March 2010|publisher=Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.|isbn=978-1-61535-366-8|pages=429–}} 3. ^{{cite web|date = 2009-06-07|author = |url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8085850.stm|title =As it happened: Euro elections 09|publisher = BBC|accessdate = 2009-06-09}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|date = 2009-03-17|author = |url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/country_profiles/1106666.stm|title =Country profile: Latvia|publisher = BBC|accessdate = 2009-06-09}} 5. ^European election results 2009 for Latvia {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160127054538/http://www.elections2009-results.eu/en/latvia_en.html |date=January 27, 2016 }} 6. ^http://www.apollo.lv/portal/news/articles/246138 External links
