The three story hotel is constructed of wood with a mansard roof, third-floor dormers, and wrought iron cresting, which are all characteristic of the Second Empire style. The hotel was built in 1898-99, when Fort Smith was a frontier town at the edge of Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Following Oklahoma statehood in 1907, the hotel declined in significance and eventually closed.[2] The building now hosts "Miss Laura's Social Club", and serves as Fort Smith's visitors center. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.[1] References1. ^1 {{NRISref|2009a}} {{National Register of Historic Places}}{{SebastianCountyAR-NRHP-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.arkansaspreservation.com/!userfiles/SB0202.nr.pdf|title=NRHP nomination for Commercial Hotel|publisher=Arkansas Preservation|accessdate=2015-03-26}} 6 : Hotel buildings completed in 1898|Buildings and structures in Fort Smith, Arkansas|Hotel buildings on the National Register of Historic Places in Arkansas|Second Empire architecture in Arkansas|1898 establishments in Arkansas|National Register of Historic Places in Sebastian County, Arkansas |
