The party was re-registered by Graham Cartmell in 2015.[1] History and electionsThe party was formed in 2003 by metalworker Howard Thomas, with the idea of using public opinion to formulate policy, with the view of true representation of the people of the UK.[3][4][5] Thomas was a candidate in the United Kingdom general election, 2010 in Reading West,[6] and gained 852 votes, beating the Green Party. A second candidate, David James, contested Wirral West for the Common Sense Party after his original choice, the Jury Team, decided it would not enter candidates. James came last with 321 votes.[7] Thomas campaigned in a car and boat dressed up to look like a yellow submarine.[8] Thomas contested the borough council election in Kentwood ward in Reading for the first time in 2008, campaigning on traffic problems.[9] In a letter to the Reading Chronicle published on 27 February 2014, Thomas announced he was leaving Common Sense to join UKIP.[10][11] The party was deregistered in November 2013 and the website closed.[4] The party was re-registered by Graham Cartmell in 2015.[1] Cartmell stood in South West Hertfordshire at the United Kingdom general election, 2015, pledging to halve the number of MPs and remove politics from health and schools by devolving those powers to a new elected assembly.[12] He came last with 256 votes (0.4%).[13] PoliciesThe party argued that immigration should be balanced to match emigration, that council tax should be replaced with income tax, and campaigned for proportional representation,[4][8] more council housing, and the legalisation of euthanasia.[6] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=View registration|url=http://registers.electoralcommission.org.uk/English/Registrations/PP2730|website=The Electoral Commission|accessdate=2 February 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Common Sense Party - Party Finance|url=http://registers.electoralcommission.org.uk/regulatory-issues/regpoliticalparties.cfm?frmGB=1&frmPartyID=450&frmType=partydetail|website=The Electoral Commission|accessdate=28 April 2010|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20100511085411/http://registers.electoralcommission.org.uk/regulatory-issues/regpoliticalparties.cfm?frmGB=1&frmPartyID=450&frmType=partydetail|archivedate=2 February 2017|date=5 Apr 2010}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=View registration - The Electoral Commission|url=http://registers.electoralcommission.org.uk/English/Registrations/PP351|website=registers.electoralcommission.org.uk|accessdate=2 February 2017}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Common Sense Party Org U.K.|url=http://www.commonsenseparty.org.uk|website=www.commonsenseparty.org.uk|accessdate=5 Apr 2010|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160521054018/http://www.commonsenseparty.org.uk/|archivedate=2 February 2017}} 5. ^{{Citenews|url=http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/s/2068293_introducing_common_sense_into_politics|title=Introducing 'Common Sense' into politics|last=Fort|first=Linda|date=25 March 2010|work=Get Reading|accessdate=28 April 2010}} 6. ^1 {{Cite news|url=http://www.readingchronicle.co.uk/news/reading/articles/2010/03/17/45444-the-yellow-peril-of-politics/|title=The yellow peril of politics|last=Hewitt|first=Adam|date=17 March 2010|work=Reading Chronicle|accessdate=28 April 2010}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.facebook.com/juryteam#!/topic.php?uid=54545033315&topic=13748|title= Jury Team & GE 2010|author=Jury Team|date=14 April 2010|publisher=Facebook|accessdate=21 May 2010}} 8. ^1 {{Cite news|url=http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/s/2070093_common_sense_party_more_wonderful_than_weird|title=Common Sense Party "more wonderful than weird"|last=Fort|first=Linda|date=27 April 2010|work=Get Reading|accessdate=28 April 2010}} 9. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/s/2025114_we_are_growing_and_could_do_it|title=‘We are growing and could do it’|last=Gray|first=Fiona|date=3 April 2008|work=Get Reading|accessdate=28 April 2010}} 10. ^Reading Chronicle, 27 February 2014, pp 14-15 11. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/local-news/commonsense-party-founder-makes-leap-6758508|title=CommonSense party founder makes the leap to UKIP|work=Reading Chronicle|date=February 28, 2014|last=Fort|first=Linda}} 12. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/12895322.General_Election_2015__Candidates_for_south_west_Hertfordshire_constituency_tell_voters_what_they_have_been_doing_over_the_last_week/|title=General Election 2015: Candidates for south west Hertfordshire constituency tell voters what they have been doing over the last week|work=Watford Observer|date=April 16, 2015|accessdate=April 17, 2017}} 13. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/constituencies/E14000951|title=Hertfordshire South West|work=BBC News|accessdate=April 17, 2017}} External links
