Coronation grapes (formally, Sovereign Coronation{{r|TorontoStar2|BCGrapeGrowers1|Rombough1|page3=196}}) are a hybrid variety of table grape developed in Canada.{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}} Coronation grapes are popular throughout Canada,{{r|LondonFreePress1}} and are available during a short period in late summer and early fall.{{r|OntarioTenderFruit1}} These grapes are characterized by their "vibrant blue-purple"{{r|TorontoStar1}} colour, similar to the related Concord variety.{{r|TorontoStar2}}

Development

Agriculture Canada's Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre in Summerland, British Columbia developed the Sovereign Coronation grape in the 1970s.{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}} This project was directed by Lyall Denby, as part of the Plant Breeding Program.{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}}

The Coronation grape is a hybrid of two North American varieties: the black Patricia (not to be confused with the white Lady Patricia{{r|Rombough1|page1=197}}) and the Himrod.{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}}

Agriculture

Coronation grapes are a "fairly hardy variety" of grape{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}} and are most productive in relatively cool climates.{{r|Rombough1|page1=196–197}}

The grapes ripen as early as late August, and are consequently available earlier than traditional varieties.{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}} Availability ranges from late August to early September in Ontario{{r|LondonFreePress1|OntarioTenderFruit1|TorontoStar1}} and early September to early October in British Columbia.{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}}

In 2007, an estimated 2.2 million kilograms of Coronation grapes were produced in Ontario.{{r|TorontoStar1}} Despite having only been introduced to the Niagara region in 2000,{{r|TorontoStar1}} in 2008 they were the most abundantly grown seedless table grape in southern Ontario.{{r|TorontoStar2}}

The flavour of the Coronation grape has been variously described as a "sweet-and-sour taste that bursts in the mouth",{{r|TorontoStar2}} "sophisticated [and] deliciously sweet",{{r|LondonFreePress1}} a "mild sweet taste",{{r|OntarioTenderFruit1}} "distinctive [and] musky",{{r|BCGrapeGrowers1}} and "an odd, off taste".{{r|Rombough1|page1=197}}

The grapes can be eaten fresh, or incorporated into fruit preserves, sauces and desserts.{{r|TorontoStar2|LondonFreePress1|OntarioTenderFruit1|TorontoStar1}} The raw grapes can be stored in a refrigerator for up to ten days, or frozen without loss of colour or flavour.{{r|TorontoStar1}}
